WD Black weird sounds

Go to solution Solved by Mighty_Miro_WD,

Yes, it could be that as well. If the drive is too noisy, then you can contact our support and arrange an RMA - http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=3CmdNW

So I have a Western Digital Black 1Tb HDD, and it is the most painful and stressful part of my day. Before I purchased said drive, I only had a WD Blue 1Tb, and I needed more space. The Blue was silent, never made a noise, barely vibrated my computer. I got the Black in, and it made my PC sound like nails on a chalkboard. It vibrates the whole PC, and whines whenever I start up a game. It is annoying, and I always think the drive is failing. But it isn't failing. I checke on multiple different monitoring softwares, and all of them said the drive was healthy. Its ridiculous and I want to return it, but I can't for a few more weeks. So to help me not to buy another black, is this a wide spread problem, or is it just me? Should I buy another black, or buy another blue and save myself from the risk?

Try to eliminate vibrations first. Thats common problem with these performance drives in cases without good drive sleds. And maybe in others too. Try to add rubber o-rings to screws, both sides if possible.

Put rubber washers or felt pads under whatever screws you have holding the HDD in place

The main problem isn't the vibration: the problem is that the drive itself makes screeching and scratching noises.

Oh. If you feel comfortable, open the top of your HDD, revealing the disc. It might be making contact with the metal around it. Or maybe the motor is messed up and needs to be replaced, which is really a pain.

If it voids the warranty, I might just return it and buy a WD Blue, because im blanking my drives next week because I'm having hundreds of software issues stemming from windows, so when

I blank my drives i'll just trade it in for a blue

Hi there @Oranges!

Have you run a test with Data Lifeguard Diagnostics on the drive? Because judging by your description it doesn't sound OK, it is not supposed to be so loud. You can download the program from here:

As for replacement, since the drive is still in warranty, you can contact our phone support for further assistance:

Hope this helps.

Cheers! :)

I ran a test on my drive using that software, and nothing comes up as unusual. It says the drive passed the extended test. Could it be the drive itself, and it just makes noise while not harming the disks themselves?

This may sound really stupid, but I registered my drives in the wrong order, registering the new, broken one with the purchase date of the old working one. Is there a way to fix this, or do I need to make a new account? (I'm sorry, I get my drives mixed up all the time)
