So I have an nVidia 650Ti, nothing special but it gets the job done.

Now a few months ago my not very old Asus Z97-A abruptly gave up life and I got it RMA'd for a new one.

My computer was out of action for about a month and a half until I installed the new board. Plugged everything back into it just as I had left it and my computer was working again.

Come the issues, the whole computer will freeze from time to time, sometimes just stuttering (the mouse stops moving and then suddenly jumps), sometimes it hangs for so long it'll just reset itself, occasionally it'll blue screen but this doesn't happen very often.

So I did a full memory test, let it do 5 passes in Memtest86 and I had no errors. So I carried on using my computer and it would occasionally crash just whilst internet browsing, but probably say once every few days so something you can ignore. Although skip to now and I've started playing my games again (now some deadlines are out of the way  ;)) and depending on the game I can play for an hour or sometimes I can only play for 2minutes before complete crash and it resets itself. Whilst playing games I get several moments where it hangs but will pick up again.

So, I checked event viewer just after a game has crashed and the computer reset...

Ok so definitely graphics card, although it was already pointing to that.

So I ran Driver Sweeper (or whatever its called now) in safe mode and cleared all the nVidia stuff and then installed the latest driver from nVidias website. No change.

Where do I go from here?

Thanks

under clock the graphics card. see how it goes.

maybe uninstall and reinstall the drivers. do an advanced install and only install the graphics driver.

go to windows updates. see what's there.

did you install new motherboard drivers after you installed the new board?

what kind of shape is the power supply?

I tried underclocking it in Afterburner, it was previously overclocked slightly but I reduced it to stock when the issues started. Underclocking it if anything made the issues worse.

When I reinstalled the driver I did an advanced install, another forum I read suggested it.

I didn't reinstall motherboard drivers, but everything else works fine, since I've swapped the same board for the same board I thought that wouldn't be an issue. Even my fan control that I had setup in Asus Fan Expert reamined how I had it after the switch.

Powersupply is 6 months old, its a Corsair AX750 and I tested it on a friends PC when my motherboard first died to check it wasn't the power supply.

You can try changing the power management on the graphics card

Nvidia control panel

  • manage 3D settings
  • Global Settings
  • Power management mode - Prefer maximum performance

Save and test to see if it helped.

The only other option I can think of is to take your card and install it into another system to test and see if the problem persists as the motherboard going bad might have damaged your vid card. As an after thought is the bios on the board they sent you up to date?

Thanks, I have switched it to maximum performance and will get back to you if it still crashes.

I am worried that it could have been affected when the mobo died but I've been hoping its driver related but the card is kinda getting old a bit now (I got it very shortly after the 650Ti was released and it's been in 3 systems now), it'll probably be due an upgrade when GTA 5 eventually releases but I hope it isn't a hardware fault....

Thanks again for the help

Ahh some progress, I underclocked a significant amount and it seems to occasionally stutter but hasn't crashed. Core clock is down 180Mhz from stock and memory is down 200Mhz. Taken a bit of a performance hit but for the time being my computer isn't crashing. I guess that probably means my card is on the way out?

I regularly monitor temps and things (just something I've always done) and my the GPU core never exceeds 50c in gaming, it usually hovers between 40-45c so its not like a thermal thing
