hey guys i had a couple questions about folding

1. i just started and im using a amd fx quad core processor and a 7750 to fold on my main rig and a 650m on my other laptop. is it worth it to fold on these?

and my other question is (not to sound like a greedy bastard) but what can i get out of folding besides giving my dad a higher electric bill :P

I'd say it's worth it. those would fold rather productively.

you don't get anything out of folding(except cool badges, as with BOINC) but if the power costs are significant enough, they might be tax deductable, where the income that paid for the electricity would be tax free income, but unless it's a very large amount, it's definitely not worth the hassle that it would require.

the point of folding is to hopefully better society and the world we live in through our obsessions with computers.

Ahh i gotcha. Thats pretty cool actually and i might just turn my old rig into a 24/7 folding rig when i hopefully get my new rig in the forseeable future!

old rigs for folding aren't always the best idea. the better idea IMO is to make your main rig a folding rig while you're away, as it will perform more computations per watt and might get newer and more specialized work-units.

although, if I get an apartment at university where my power consumption isn't an issue, and doesn't affect my bills, I'll be folding all day

That makes sense to do. might just sell the old rig then and just use the money from that to lessen the amount of the new one

Although that is true, I'd still rather have it folding than not folding. Every little bit helps, and with enough "old" rigs, things will go that much faster. For example, I use WCG (Boinc project), and the "Fight AIDS Home" has been running ever since 2005, and it's still far away form ending.

If you can afford the power bill, you should keep the old rig busy. If you can't, you might as well try to sell it, or donate it to a charity institution that can make use of it. Or, you could do like me, and try experimenting with weird overclocking, without the fear of having the rig die.

On that last one, ofc the stability test chosen is 24/7 folding.... :P
