Waterproofing Hard Drives

Go to solution Solved by fusion327,

Thanks @alpenwasser. I'll definitely look into some of the recommendations. Hopefully they'll fit into my safety deposit box. Haha.

Quick background info: Currently have a ZFS2 Nas4Free server system at my house. I need a last resort / offsite backup solution for my essential data in case of software and physical damage.

I am currently backing up all my essential data (photos/documents/etc.) to a 2TB WD Green Drive and plan to put it into a bank safety deposit box.

How do I protect the 2TB backup drive from the elements?

I plan to put it in anti static bag and then a ziploc bag.

1. Would the ziploc bag counter the effect of the anti static bag?

2. Is ziploc bag sufficient to keep water out in case of a flood? (My box is one of the lower safety deposit box)

Any other concerns you see?

Thanks!

(I dont plan to do an online sync as I dont want it online and dont want to pay anymore. Haha)

Hm, have you looked if Pelican make a case of suitable dimensions? I have a Pelicase for

my laptop and it's extremely solid (and water- and dustproof of course). Or Otterbox, or

any similar alternatives.

Personally, I'd probably go for anti-static bag + Pelicase or something comparable.

Hey fusion327,

It looks like you have very valuable data there. @alpenwasser gave you some good suggestions. I would also suggest having multiple backups to ensure nothing gets lost, if your data is very valuable. Having multiple backups on different spots would enable you to be safe in case something happens with one of the backups (gets stolen, destroyed, fails, etc.).
HDDs are mechanical units after all and failure do happen.
