Hi

There new to Linustechtips (Newbie-noob), awesome channel.

I am looking for some info on PoE (my network knowledge is limited)

I want to setup led lighting around the house via PoE.

My understanding is that I take (TL-SG2424P) run separate Cat5e cable to each 6 watt Led lights in each room.

Connect PoE switch to UPS, that connects to surge protector to wall socket.

Or should LED light connect to control panel switch in wall, that then runs to PoE switch. All via Cat5e.

How do i connect led bulb to Cat5e cable for the power?

Will that work? or do I need to connect PoE switch to a pc.

I am thinking of adding movement sensor to Led light. The light switch can have a switch to turn on/ff the sensor, how?

Main purpose is to reduce electricity bill over a year period, and I love DIY and believe PoE is tech that is going to take-off in the near future.

Please reply via comments or links that will help me gain the knowledge before I spend any money on this project.

Jared

You will need a PoE switch that can supply the needed watts to each line, which you have found. You then could break out the cable and directly hook it up to the leds (make sure you have a resistor) but this may be difficult to control brightness, colour, etc. Or you could use something like http://www.moodifier.net/hardware/poe-led-driver/ which has built in protection for heat and surge and control software. It also has lines for switches so you could use something like an arduino with a motion sensor.

Thank you

That helps alot.

So it is wall socket- UPS with built in surge protector-PoE switch-resistor-Led lights.

There are not so many places in South Africa that sell these gadgets, I would have to import most of them.

Quick response, awesome.

Only two of the wire in a CAT cable cary power just use those and hook them up to lights, but beware POE is 50V i believe.

I use a Cisco SG200-26P for my POE security system and its wonderful.

Correct. if you get this make sure you get the right leds and that they are hooked up right. Everything is in the documentation. Also you shouldn't need a resistor because its limited internally.
