Custom Recovery Image

I found everything needed for the rooting process + instructions, but it says I should wipe everything and install the .zip ROM and Gapps from the custom recovery menu, but I can't access it, because the operation requires rooted phone so in this case first my phone has to be rooted and then I install the Custom recovery image. But I can't install the ROM without custom recovery and I can't have install the custom recovery without root. The heck! Can someone explain me in a more different and easier way so it is understandable!
