looking for a laptop

my mom needs a new laptop, all she does is web browsing and word processing.  i was thinking chromebook, but honestly the only prerequisites are sub 300 USD.  What is the thinnest laptop i can get for 300?

I can help with programming and hardware.

a chromebook sounds like a good idea, except she'd be tied to using google docs for word processing, which *honestly* isnt all that great.

 

if performance isnt that important, i'd suggets going to a local computer store, and look at some netbooks.
