I mostly work on my dell xps15 laptop (4702HQ / 16Go Ram / 512Go SSD) with runs on linux

For games, I uses my desktop pc which starts to get a bit old. However I plan to upgrade it in the next few months, as I may use it for large computation.

I'll use it for scientific computation, which would take to long to run on a laptop but would be small enough so I don't have to run it on clusters using massivelly parrallel paradigm

Ok so my current destop buiild is

- Asus P5QL Pro (LGA775)

- intel E5200 dual core (2.5Ghz, OC at 3.25Ghz)

- 8Go DDR2 OCZ

- ATI HD 6850

- a bunch of HHD, including a WD Green 2To for storage

- Antec 450W 800+ PSU

- Antec nine hundred two case

I plan to go for a socket 1150 (not as expensive as a 2011-v3)

- i7 4790K

- 16~32Go RAM

- include a samsung 840 pro SSD (256Go) I own and don't use (was in a previous laptop) for my Linux system

- add another ssh for a Windows system ?

- keep my WD Green 2To (and perhaps add other disks in raid)

What I'm not sure about yet

- Which motherboard to use ? I need good networking (dual RJ45 would be nice to have), stability, sata performaces ... but I don't really care about PCI-E, I was thinking about a Z97 chipset

- Which ram model ?

- Keep my HD6850 or upgrade ? (Nvidia 750?)

Does the new config makes sense for scientific computation and networking simulation ?

Which motherboard / chipset to use ?

Is an HD6850 enough for games likes LOL / starcraft / diablo in 1080p or should I consider an upgrade ?

I'm using dual 1080p monitors but I'm considering changing to a single 21:9 screen

PS: compatibility with Xeon-Phi would be a real plus in the long run

Wow, that's pretty crappy. I'd do a completely new build and just take the hard drives so you don't need to pay for Windows again

One day I will have my GTX 970. One day. PC specs are at my profile.

Not sure how to check what part works with what? Check out my compatibility guide!

the B85 motherboard I've looked at don't suport Raid ... That's a big no for me, as for the Xeon, I don't need ECC memory on my desktop (or at least i'm not readdy to pay the price for it), so apart from going 6-8 cores with the new Xeon on 2011-v3 that are uber expensives ...
