Hi to everyone, this is my first post on the forum

I'm building my first pc and i have some problems on choosing the mobo and the ram. I'm aiming at a editing workstation/gaming pc, i already have the cpu (5820k) the psu (hx750i) but i'm pretty confused on the motherboard. I was looking at the msi x99s gaming 7 and 4x4gb g.skill ddr4, but when i checked the compatibility on the msi site with the oc rams, the mobo was compatible only with 2 or 4 dimms and not 8. I may buy some extra 16gb in future so im pretty concerned, i looked even at higher priced msi mobos and seemed that they are compatible with only 4 dimms, except the x99s krait edition, which seems strange to me.

What that means is that it supports dual or quad channel ram. There is no such thing and 8 channel ram. You can use all 8 slots, but they will operate in either dual or quad channel mode, depending on how you set it up.

Maybe i wasn't clear, if you go on the msi site every mobo has it's compatibility page for every ram. Some ram are supported for 8 dimms but most of them are supported only for 2 or 4. Even if i don't understand how would you use only 2 dimms of ddr4 if it's four channel

X99 can run dual channel memory, but doing so kind of defeats the purpose of using an X99 (LGA 2011) system since it is optimized to run quad channel.

This RAM compatibility page for that mobo shows that you can run all those models of RAM in dual or quad mode, and use up to all 8 DIMMS on the mobo.

OC as stated in those sheets just means it's not running at the base clock. I have the ASRock Fatal1ty 990FX Killer mobo, and ASRock says that it supports "DDR3 2450(OC)/2100(OC)/1600/1333/1066". That technically means that running RAM at 2100MHz or 2450MHz is an overclock of the mobo DIMMs. Officially my mobo doesn't even support 1866MHZ RAM, but I am currently running a 2x4GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer 1866MHz kit. All I had to do was enable XMP in the UEFI and tell it to run the RAM at 1866MHz instead of the base 1333MHz.

With that board, you can run pretty much any speed RAM - "DDR4 2133/2200*/2400*/2600*/2666*/2750*/3000*/3110*/3333*(*OC) HMz" - without having to worry about messing with the OC settings, as long as you have XMP enabled.

Ok, thank you a lot, i think i'll go with that motherboard and g.skill, i also like the adata xpg z1 but they are much more expensive.

You're welcome. Good luck on the build and don't be afraid to ask more questions is you need to. Welcome to the community.
