I am pretty sure that "discounted" price for the upgrade is for an OEM upgrade - which means it is tied to the PC - that being his laptop. If he wants to install it on the desktop, would need a new license.

Maybe someone knows a bit more, but that is the way I believe it works....

Sorry in advance if this is in the totally wrong thread but I didn't really know where to put it...

My friend has just bought an SSD for his laptop and is thinking of getting the Windows 8 upgrade while it's still cheap. He is also considering getting a proper desktop PC in the near future and then using the same SSD for that.

The issue I thought would happen is that the way Windows Upgrade works, the new Win8 licence wouldn't allow Windows to be re-installed on the desktop when it comes to it.

Can he install the SSD, use the Vista Key to upgrade to Windows 8, use the laptop until the desktop is bought, install that same SSD in the desktop, then re-install Windows 8 on it?

I've had a quick look online but I can't seem to find the answer I'm looking for and was wondering if you guys could help?

So, the chances that Windows 8, like Windows Vista is tied to the laptop hardware are pretty high?

Either way really it would be beneficial since 8 would be more valuable than Vista when he comes to sell the laptop.

the upgrade license key will only work once. If you upgrade to windows 8 then reformat on the same computer later you cannot activate online you must call microsoft.

I had this problem with a customers PC yesterday, HDD died put in a new HDD and the key would not work. I understand it then wasn't an upgrade after a new HDD was put in but Microsoft was happy to oblige. I'm sure you could convince them that you are installing in on a majorly upgraded machine and they might give you the activation key.
