So i built a computer for a friend of mine awhile back, and i put my old psu in his computer. He wasnt needing the power i was so i though it would supply his pc fine, fyi mine kept crashing while using the psu and stopped after swapping it out. Soon after he gets his pc home the same thing happens to him, his pc starts crashing randomly. So i assumed it was psu and we swapped it out and the crashes stopped for awhile. About a week later his pc starts crashing again, but its not like a normal crash. He gets a blue screen with no text on it and it just sits on that screen until he manually restarts the pc. The blue screen contains no text or anything other then some gray/white lines going horizontally across the screen.  It doesnt seem to be crashing for a specific reason, the crashes are completely random and the kernel power error that was showing with the old psu is still showing in the windows event logs. Im completely clueless on why this is happening, any ideas?

Need hardware specs and os info.

Off the top of my head it could be damage left over from the malfunctioning PSU.

And i was thinking it might be damage left over but at the same time it had been in my pc a lot longer then it was in his without any damage to mine.

Hmm. Power supply degradation is often a slippery slope, its possible it wasnt as bad at the time you were using it. What make and model of PSU? Capacity?

Have him check eventviewer for codes and monitor voltages using HWMonitor, see what's coming up there for a start.

It was a Corsair cx600 and it showing up as kernel power in eventviewer, not sure what code it was displaying though. What would we need to look for in HWMonitor to show something at fault?

Heh! CX600s have terrible rail quality. I just RMA'd one that worked fine for months but suddenly went berserk and nuked my GTX970 with no warning.

Watch the +12V rail for large fluctuations up and down, but I would recommend getting rid of that time bomb.

So you already swapped the CX600 out of his system? Or is he still using it?

If the system is still crashing with a kernel power error even with a new PSU, that would suggest maybe the motherboard itself is damaged. Try the usual diagnostics: Run memtest86, make sure you clear the CMOS, reset BIOS to defaults, run on one stick of RAM, etc.

Eliminate all the possible issues until you've only got one option left. It's a bit of a long process unfortunately.

If your friend is still using that CX600, get it out of the system ASAP and swap in another PSU. Run stress tests and see if the issue comes back.

the cx600 was already swapped out for a EVGA Supernova 750 already
