GeForce GTX 980 OC

Go to solution Solved by hitsu1,

Depends completely on the silicon lottery. On my reference cards I got +305 to the GPU Clock and +400 to the memory clock. I have three card in SLI so those numbers are for the lowest grade GPU I have.

Seems like you have selected a pretty conservative overclock. From what I have seen in other 980 reference cards you should have some more headroom to test so more. Are you seeing any artifacting when running your benchmarks yet?

How high speeds are people usually getting on these cards? I have a 980 with the reference cooler, got it running at 1300 Mhz base, 1450 Mhz on boost, mem I got to 1895 Mhz. I have not tried to push it any further. All adds up to +15% OC on Core and +8% OC on mem. Temps under 3DMark is sitting at 80C. Can I push this card much further?

Do you have the reference card from NVidia, or the custom from MSI?

NVM, didn't read thoroughly. I have the reference card, so cooling isn't as good as others, but temps haven't really changed from stock to OC...

ur getting 80C at stock??

The fan curve is going to keep it at a certain temp.

True. that kinda slipped my mind.   i didnt really realize the stock cooler was that bad at cooling though.  then again ive never owned a reference card.

I had terrible airflow in my case, changed case yesterday, but I haven't checked temps after that. It was just a mess of cables and weird fan placement, all fixed now but I haven't checked temps with better cable management and better fans. Only kicked up to 80C during benchmark, and other heavy games, such as FC4 and BF4 running at Ultra.

My fan curve is set to only run the fan at about 45% at 80C 'cuz of noise, so I can ramp it up a fair bit more when it comes to that.

It's probably not that bad. Those blower coolers tend to be loud, so it's probably a conservative fan curve to keep noise down.

Yeah, set to only run fan at about 45% AT 80C, it doesn't really get noisy until around 75% fan speed.

Stock fan curve makes it so the fans run really low and are not at 100% even at 90 degrees. 3D Mark is going to push your cards a lot harder than any game out there.  Tweak your fan curve and then run some games.

I will change the fan curve to run at about 75% or so at 80C, and run some games and benchmarks and go from there. But coming back to the original question, can I expect a higher OC than the one I have now before it becomes unstable?

Mark ur OC down right now as stable.  bump up ur OC do some testing if its stable congrats you hit a new OC limit.  if its not stable revert to ur stable OC.

No one can really tell you if you will achieve more its all different for every card.

Yeah, I know the difference in cards, I just thought there maybe was a certain speed I could expect. I am happy with the core clock, I am focusing on getting a higher mem clock ATM.

I have no artifacting at all when running 3DMark FireStrike, Unigine Valley, FC4 and BF4. I checked some other overclocks, and it seems like I should be able to get the mem up to around 2000 Mhz (+378).

Sounds good. Just tweaking those two settings should be fairly safe. The only case where I remember someone on this forum frying their 980s was when they were messing with the voltage in ways they should not have.

I am not planning to overvoltage my GPU, I have never done that, and considering it is a stock cooler I am just going to push the OC as high as possible without touching the voltage settings. 3DMark FireStrike gave me over 11K, and as far as I know, that's a pretty good result on a single-GPU, quad-core setup(?)...

That is very solid. The people who get 13-16k on their 4790k and 980s have both extremely overclocked and on liquid cooling.

Yeah, my 4790K is running on stock speeds for now on an H105. My 980 isn't really considered 'extremely' overclocked neither. I don't remember the exact result ATM, but I think it's around 11 450.

Unless you are talking about cpu watercooled, my GPU is running the stock bios, overclocked, and air cooled with the stock ACX 2.0. I was able to hit Firestrike at 13950 on a single card. GPU score was 16560 on that run.

I have a potato!

After configuring a new fan curve I achieved a max temp of 67C in 3DMark FireStrike with +173 core and +285 mem. Got a nice score of 11739. I think the new fan curve solved my heat issues (Fan topped out on 67% speed)! I think I'll settle for that for the time being. GPU score was 14561.

I have a 4790k at 4.7 ghz (cooled by an H320 so temps are below 80 even at 1.45v for 4.9 to 5ghz run) I just picked up a 980 Classified and have a boost clock of 1520 and memory at 2153. My score was 14027. I overpaid for the classy card but it never goes over 70c and is whisper quite so the extra money was worth it just for that IMO.
