Perfect Mechanical Keyboard?

JTMarch86

Hey guys, I need some help deciding on a keyboard.

It seems like NO ONE makes everything I want in a keyboard.

But since there are sooo many different ones, there's no way I could have heard of them all, especially since I'm new to the

mechanical gaming keyboard scene.

Here are the features I really want on a mechanical keyboard

MX Cherry Blue or Brown switches

Black keyboard

White or Blue LED back lighting (preferably 16.7million color backlighting in case I change my pc color scheme)

Dedicated Media keys (volume roller or knob is a definite plus)

Full sized Shift, Enter, and Backspace buttons.

The arrow keys are alione, not integrated into the num pad (its easier to find when there's nothing around it)

I don't need a number pad, or even programable side keys

It seems I can find like everything I want on multiple keyboards, but they each leave out 1 or two important things.

Possibilities:

Corsair Vengance K70 - On the website, it says they have Cherry MX Brown and Blue switches, but all I can find online are red's (which I don't want)

If I could get this keyboard, in black with brown or blue switches, with a white or blue backlight, I would buy it now. Hopefully, I'll be able to get this from Corsair

themselves. Anyone know where I can get this?

Corsair K95 - this is just about perfect, except it's a bit too big. I don't play MMO's so I wouldn't use the side keys, and with those added, it's just too long for my desk. If they offered a version of it, exactly the same without those extra keys on the left, or with just one row, I would buy it.

Logitech G710+  Great keyboard, has all the features I like, except it only comes with Cherry MX Reds. And has that ugly orange thing on the left (although I'm sure I could paint that). This keyboard would be a realy contender for me if they offered more switch choices.

Cooler Master Storm QuickFire Rapid - this layout is perfect for laying the keyboard on my lap, and relaxing. It has a bunch of switch options, including brown and blue. The arrow keys are by themselves, full size keys, and it looks great. But NO BACKLIGHT! and my room is always very dark and I need it to have one.

Is it hard to mod keyboards and put led's in them to backlight the keys? I know I couldnt have the light come through the keys themselves without buying completely new ones, or having a very expensive laser do it lol

Cooler Master Storm QuickFire TK  - This has everything I like, except the arrow keys are built into the keypad. Which I HATE. But it does have Cherry MX Blue and Brown switches, and a backlight.  so IDK

So what do you guys think?? Have a favorite out of these? Do you have one? what is it like? Are there other keyboards that fit my criteria?

I would really appreciate the help guys

thanks!!!

~JTM

I know they don't get recommended as much around here, but I might look into Keycool keyboards. The 84 and 87 models sound like they would be near perfect for you.

nice i totally forgot about those the 84 key layout ones look nice and are fairly close to a layout I designed years ago. The thing I dont like about them is where the put Home and the Fn key and that there is no menu key.

This would also be a good time to mention that the G710+ has o-rings pre-installed on the bottom of each key so the brown will feel a little different than a normal brown switch. If you don't like how the o-rings feel however, you can just take them off and it will just be a normal brown switch.

the switch itself doesnt feel any different at all. Smashing the key all the way down (aka Bottoming Out) does, it softens the blow a bit and quiets it down. I install orings on all my regularly used boards and prefer it especially for lengthy typing sessions. There are many people that think it detracts from the feeling of the mechanicalness of the keyboard you want that feeling take a look a blue, green, and white switches and even then clicking and tactility is not Cherry MX's forte as there are other switch types that handle this much better.

When I said it changes the feel of the switch, that's what I meant. I guess I should try to be more specific next time. But I understand what they do.

yea i would say feeling of the keyboard or of a brown switch keyboard, something along those lines. There are other factors that change how a keyboard will feel as well the biggest being the keycaps.

The Ducky keyboards do not have dedicated media keys, so it might not be for you. Though if you don't mind function media keys, Ducky would almost certainly be the way to go.

The Logitech G710+ uses brown cherry MX switches with O-rings, so functionally it probably meets your needs but again, you might not like that aesthetics.

Also, I Corsair is looking to expand their key switches to brown and blue - a K70 w/ brown or blue (I don't remember which) was on display at Computex 2013, so probably wait for that if you have the patience.

(By the way, colour changeable switches on normal keys (i.e. letters, numbers, function, etc. - NOT spacebar, enter, shift, etc.) are not currently possible without weird gimmicks because the LED would be too big to fit into each individual key)

Have a look at the ryos MK pro and MK glow freom roccat. Except for the dedicated media stuff it has everything you want (they are in the F1-12 keys via an Fn- button.

Yeah, I got PBT keycaps recently and I have to say I was doubting if they were going to be worth it, but they are amazing and probably never ging back to ABS.

I am sat here typing on the Das Keyboard Ultimate - tbh - I regret buying it. i love the tactile feedback and the sound - however the blank keys are just a pain in the arse!!! always making mistakes, and i consider myself a decent typist. Backspace is my best friend haha. but the blue switches are beast!

I bought some of the ones from Ducky on tiger imports. And I have heard that a lot of people liked metal caps. I might want to look up on those.

why didnt you get the model with legends? The DAS has a 100% standard US ANSI layout, so you shouldnt have any problem finding keycaps for it.

I dont think youlld be able to find a full set anymore unless you manage to fine someone selling a used set.
