Which cpu to pick?

Go to solution Solved by i_build_nanosuits,

I just dont wanna buy the i5-4690k and find out in a year that games need 6~8 threads to work ( Ubisoft traumatized me ). I also know that down the road i could overclock the i5-4690k ( when i get a new z board ) and breathe some more life to it. I just really wanna make a smart purchase....since i yolo"ed" with the H97 board.

if you already own a H97 motherboard, buying a Z97 board and a core i5-4690K makes absolutely no sense what so ever...just get a xeon 1231V3 and enjoy.

Yes many games take advantage of more than 4 cpu threads RIGHT NOW...and with many more to come.

The Core i5 is seing extremely high CPU core usage in many games ALREADY and this won't look good for it's near/distant future when it comes to gaming...directX12 is on it's way within a year or two more and more games will be properly multi-threaded workloads and they WILL use those extra threads available to the game engine that's a given, PS4/XBone games port already do so..IMHO in the long run the xeon 1231V3 is a better choice unless you are a hard core MMO/RTS player who play a lot of those bad games built upon old game engines...in which case higher clockspeed will get slightly better results. But most of the time, hyper-threading seem to help more than increased clockspeed from overclocking.

So i am going for my 3rd build, since my previous one i gave it to my brother.

I already have this http://pcpartpicker.com/p/F7LzsY

I am a bit confused between the i5-4690k and the e3 1230 V3 .

- Budget 250$

- Right now i am just gaming, maybe just MAYBE ill do content some creation as a hobby.

This is a cpu purchase that i want it to last at least 1~3 years. Will those extra threads that the Xeon has be better down the road? ( upcoming years ) or buying a Z board ( i already have the H97 ) and overclocking the i5 be better ?

Also is it true that Xeons tend to have incompatibility issues with user grade ram?

Thanks alot for taking your time to read this and help me with my inquiry, have a nice day.

snip!

this is IMHO a pretty decent in dept video review for the xeon 1231V3...should answer a lot of your questions (i watched the entire review and it's IMHO a very fair opinion from this youtuber):

| CPU: Core i7-8700K @ 4.89ghz - 1.21v  Motherboard: Asus ROG STRIX Z370-E GAMING  CPU Cooler: Corsair H100i V2 |
| GPU: MSI RTX 3080Ti Ventus 3X OC  RAM: 32GB T-Force Delta RGB 3066mhz |
| Displays: Acer Predator XB270HU 1440p Gsync 144hz IPS Gaming monitor | Oculus Quest 3 VR

I5 4690k for sure. Even better if u can get some overclocking in.

i5-4690k for gaming hands down. i would be sure that i was going to do `work` before i bought the other one.

And no i dont think so, that would be wierd.

To OP: ignore such responds, do your own research...it all depends on a lot of factors...some tings might be more relevant than others to you.

What was wrong? lol

the ''hands down'' part...it's really not that simple...in MANY situations the hyper-threaded xeon chip will perform better than a 4.6ghz core i5 (including many games, such as shown in Brian's video review) so it's not a ''hands down'' choice, they trade blows from game to game and the xeon is noticeably stronger with multi-threaded tasks and is IMHO more future-proof as well so i'd personaly go with a xeon E3-1231V3 personaly...get the job done as well if not better while consuming a lot less energy than an overclocked core i5.

since he stated that he does gaming and is not entierly sure of doing `work` i would rather save some money and buy the i5, minimal difference or even nothing for gaming. aswell you get OC.

But hey, do what you want OP. ;)

Thanks, ill go with the xeon, i just hope i dont run into any incompatibility crap.

oh no...about that ram incompatibility you've talked about? there is only one type of RAM and it's DDR3 RAM and it will work 100% sure with that CPU/motherboard.

Every H97 board also support haswell refresh chips such as the xeon E3-1231V3 out of the box so this is also guaranteed to work out of the box...same for the 1230v3, but the 1231v3 is usualy about the same price and is 100mhz faster...so i'd go with that one...also the provided cooling solution with that chip is perfectly adequate as show in the video review it's the copper based heatsink with a better fan.

You really should go look up gaming benchmarks. I5 is the better cpu for that. Overclocking vs hyperthreading, overclocking will net more performance. And even at stock speeds the i5 gives better performance in games. And yes maybe future games will take advantage of hyperthreading but then again maybe not. And if they do, will it beat out an overclocked i5?

PC Audio Setup = Beyerdynamic DT 770 pro 80 ohm and Sennheiser pc37x (also for xbox) hooked up to Schiit Fulla 3
