My dad wants to buy a tablet for reading ebooks, should he buy a kindle? Or an iPad mini ($250 refurbished)? It has to be an out of the box solution with the minimum complications posible since i'm the "IT guy of the house" and i dont want to be dealing with tablet issues every week hahahahah

Cheers!

Sold my build..

Kindle. Don't waste the money on an iPad just for reading books if that's all he wants. If he wanted more functionality he could go after a Samsung tablet because they are cheaper.

Downloading programs from CNet is not a good idea, as they will commonly include unwanted, and sometimes dangerous bloatware... The more you know.

Anything but samsung, their tablets are shit and their phones aren't that great either...

I'd recommend an LG tablet or something

It's not a bug, it's an undocumented feature!

Really? I have plenty of friends and family who use their devices (Phones and tablets) and have no issues what so ever. Except for the battery life on the 3, almost 4 year old Galaxy S3. I have used them and the only complaint I have is the touch wiz UI, which has been basically redone for their new devices (For example on the Galaxy S6) Which brings performance improvements and less bloatware. Please explain how their devices are so bad. They'd be great because the screens on the tablets are really nice, and would be great for reading, and OP's father would be able to play games if he wanted.

Their phones are of bad build quality(most of them), not the hardware itself, and I find most phones bloated(but not as much as phones with carrier branding). The screens on samsung's higher end phones are nice though.TW sucks really badly(I've only seen 2 samsung phones with a custom rom irl in the last 4 years) and is slow, their fingerprint scanner on the alpha and note 4 is retarded(you have to swipe down from the middle of the screen to unlock the device, compared to holding your finger on the home button/scanner on the iPhone 5S/6/6+), I've seen my friend fail many times to unlock his phone). And their tablets are slow in general... except for the really expensive ones which have better hardware

If he just wants to read books, buy a regular Kindle.  If he wants a general purpose tablet as well, get the iPad Mini, remember to get an iPad Mini 2, the 3 is just the same with more storage options and TouchID.
