I think something is seriously wrong with my PC :0

Help please

*Note my PSU is http://www.amazon.co.uk/Cooler-Master-Elite-Power-Supply/dp/B004XG6I1W couldn't find that one on PC Part Picker

This is what I originally had

I decided to go from AMD - > Intel so this was my upgrade

As soon as I wired everything and done it all, when I tried powering my PC It wouldn't work. I completely shit myself at this point

- I checked if everything was plugged in

- Re plugged the power cables at the wall, and motherboard and stuff a few times

It still didn't work, I came over to my other PC to search on LinusTech why it didn't work. When I went back to my PC I realized there was a burning smell from my PC, I immediately shut it off. I couldn't tell which was frying but the PSU smelt quite strong. I unplugged it all, re plugged it again outside the PC it still didn't work. I tried trying my old motherboard (AMD) to check if my new motherboard was maybe fried and it still didn't work. I'm getting a replacement Power Supply tomorrow.

However what I am scared about is,

- Are my PC Components fried?

- What if the PSU still doesn't work?

- How comes the burning smell only came after, and not immediately?

thanks any help is appreciated.

if only your psu smells, you have a great chance you're fine, especially because the burn smell wasnt instant.

i've had a pc run for an hour or so on a burning power supply because i needed to safely shut down the programs running on it to keep my data.

if you're as lucky as i was on that part, you should be fine.

EDIT: dont bump, its bad in many ways

I'm going to precursor all this by saying, I hope you have now learnt your lesson. Never buy a cheap power supply. In my builds I only use a PSU if it has an 80+ rating of some sort, that way I know the internals are of some quality (not always but for the most part).

- I don't know if your components are fried, Most likely not as almost every PSU today comes with protection (ovp/uvp etc) and the fact your PC was never turned on suggests it may not have been pushing any power though the wires, but then again it could have. You will need to wait until tomorrow to find out.

- If your new PSU still fails to power on the devices its time to take everything out of your case and do a full visual inspection of your parts, If everything looks ok then move onto inserting the basic items to get your PC to boot and see if it works. If it still fails then you're going to need to start thinking about RMA's/

- The burning smell was most likely a bad quality capacitor, they wont blow instantly but they can do at anytime.

is the one I had, Got an amazon link to it on the thread not good enough. It says its the 70% thing and also it says it has

haha lesson learned, just quote people instead with a question :P

Just joking anyway

  • Multiple protection design(OVP/OCP/OPP/SCP)

Does those safety measures on my PSU stop any damage being done to my other components?
