RAM Question

Go to solution Solved by Sack,

I know its bad to not put RAM in a set. but in a mobo with only 2 slots. would it be ok to say. put 1 4GB Adata stick. and 1 2GB stick to make 6GB of RAM?

or would that be a raid automatically or would it depend heavily on the mobo.

Mixing RAM is not a good thing, mixing sizes is even worse, and I even think you'll slow it down even worse and make your whole system prone to instability.

thats exactly what i thought. it would make a reading incompatibility. thankyou. just wanted to be 100% sure.

Generally speaking it wont be a problem, the mobo should set the timings to the most relaxed memories speeds (if it doesn't and one stick cant keep up with the others timings that's where the instability will usually come from but you can set the timings manually to fix that), you will only be able to run them in single channel mode though (again auto set by the mobo), dual channel mode will only work with sticks of the same size and it is generally better (but not outright necessary) to have matched pairs because their timings and signal speeds will be closely matched.

ok then here IS a question for you then :P

4 slots. 2 blue 2 white

i shove the 4GB in the blue and the 2GB in the white.

will it run ok?

I think so but if you look in your mobo manual it will have a recommendation for what slots to use :)

:P its not my mobo. tis a customers. and i doubt they have the manual anymore.

seems to be working alright..xD

Oh cool, shame its not yours lol I just checked the manual online ;) It sounds like yours would actually run dual channel on the lesser amount of memory even with mismatched sizes overflowing to single channel on the excess of the larger stick :) In your case it recommends putting them both in blue or both in black (for dual channel) so it might be worth checking if that's the case with your customers, in your case (and possibly your customers) if you put one in each it would default to single channel even though its capable of dual channel.

The 2 diff colors are for dual channel. Its kinda like SLI, it only works if you have 2 (or more) of the same things. Mixing it isn't good for the longevity of the RAM or the mobo, but will not blow up the PC or anything. When compared to 2 of the same sticks in there, you may at most see a 10% decrease. Just go and do it. they will run at the lowest common speed. ie. if one is 1600 mhz and the other 1866 mhz, both can only run at 1600mhz.

AND FOR THE LOVE OF LORD GABEN, DON'T OVERCLOCK THIS SETUP!!

they're both 1333 ghz :P but they kept bugging me to put all the RAM in. soooo if theres problems...more money for me i guess. and no. i never overclock peoples stuff.

another problem is. they only have 1 ADATA 4GB 1333ghz. and 1 Corsair 2GB 1333ghz stick.

no pairs :/ so would it be better just to pop the 1 4GB in. in 1 color. or would it be ideal to have 1 adata in 1 color and the corsair in another?

The color won't matter if they aren't the same size. Dual channel only works with identical sticks

sooooooooooooooooooooo just run the 4GB? and say i put the other one and its not working? or?.

put both in. The 4gb one closest to the CPU. Slot 0. Should be marked on the mobo put the 2gb one in either slot 1 ( different color) or slot 2 (same color) because they don' match, it will work absolutely the same depending on the mobo. If you wanna make it look neat, try slot 2, if that doesn't work, then slot one.
