Do Network Attached Storage computers have to be separate systems? Or can I put a load of drives into any computer and have them back up data via a network?

For example: I'm currently building a workstation PC and my initial plan in terms of storage was to have the OS and select programs loaded on an M.2 x4 drive, have all of my games on an SSD, and then have everything else loaded onto a NAS so that me and my family will pretty much never lose any data again.

Could I cut out the middle-man and have my workstation also be a NAS-type system?

Would this only be used for backing up data?

would recommend a different pc with FreeNAS but you could always share the folders on your pc via windows.

And to access data like pictures and certain programs, yeah.

I would recommend a separate PC so you can backup to it and keep important data on it in case your pc gets messed up somehow.

Before I had my NAS, I used my rig as a pseudo server to see if I wanted a NAS. I used FileZilla's server application for that - however, it uses FTP.
