I need a new router, one for my roku, Xbox(I know, bought it before I was tech savvy, once been converted) sonos, etc. However, I need it to go on the same area as my cable box. I forget the name of the Jack, but they're is only one there. How can I connect a cable box and a router to the same Jack? Or is there an easy way to add another Jack? And can you guys recommend a cheap router?

Just a guy who peaked at building back in the days of the GTX 980. If you see me here, assume i have technical knowledge akin to a committed hobbyist builder back then. If something's changed, you'll need to tell me(nicely plz). I'm probably asking for help with the modern build scene since I have no clue what's going on.

The router should plug into the cable box, receiving and transmitting from there.

There are many cheap, but decent offerings from D-Link, Asus, Linksys, etc. What price range?

The projects never end in my line of work.

Sounds like you'll be doing a fair bit of streaming. I'd stay in the likes of Netgear and Asus routers. I personally use the R7000 Nighthawk from Netgear and I absolutely love it.

Also, I'd stay away from Linksys. Since Belkin bought them out, their equipment is sub-par compared to D-Link, Netgear, and Asus. If you opt for the WRT1900AC, spend the extra $50 and get the Nighthawk x6 R8000 from Netgear. With that in mind, also, do NOT get the Nighthawk x4 R7500. Not worth it compared to the R7000.

Personal favorite and streaming/gaming recommendation; Asus RT-AC87U.

EDIT: With a $100 budget, ignore everything I said.

don't need the wireless to be good, just the Ethernet... did I just say something stupid non-techie? does that make sense? I want to deliver a good wired connection...

EDIT: I would need a modem and a router... I think... unless the cable box functions as a modem and the Ethernet is an Ethernet out... BTW, I saw the correct cable in AND out. It is an RF cable? If I bought a modem and a router, the modem could go into there, then into the router... unless the cable box is a modem, and the Ethernet is Ethernet OUT, not in. Does anyone know?

Maybe I could put my current router down there and give myself an upgrade... Gaming quality router for $100?

The cable box is the modem in that scenario.

So you could just get a router.

cool. so the Ethernet, which is an Ethernet out, will go into the router. sowould all three of those routers be a good upgrade on the wrt160n from Linksys, and be fit for gaming?

Yes, all of the ones we recommended would be a very big upgrade.

Unless the Linksys box or description specifically has "Cisco" on the box, I will NOT buy them. Belkin bought Linksys a few years back, and the devices just aren't as big of a deal as they used to be.

If you don't need a modem or good wifi, just get a regular router and cheap ethernet switch if you need more ports for wired connections.

I need a gaming speed Ethernet router for my rig, and the downstairs will get the old router.

well, I'm currently using the old linksys wrt160n, which is a cisco one. I am looking to upgrade it, with the upgrade costing 100 usd or less, and the downstairs entertainment center gets the wrt160n. Ideas?
