Native vs VSR (SSAA) Performance Hit

I recently upgraded to an r9 290 with an FX-8320e (OC to 4.5Ghz) and have been using AMD VSR (or SSAA) to improve the quality of games. I usually downsample from 2560x1440p and the quality looks soooo much better than normal, which is why I was wondering. If I upgrade to a 1440p monitor will I get better performance than using VSR, or worse? I'm a noob with this stuff, so I'm sorry if I'm asking a stupid question, but any help is appreciated!
