Don't buy an amp/dac until you've tried the headphones on your onboard audio first. For all you know that might be able to power them perfectly fine.

Also, dedicated headphones will produce a far greater quality of sound as well as sound stage, which is why you should get them over a gaming headset.

Good brands to look at are sennheiser, AKG, audio technica and beyerdynamic, also it depends on your budget and whether you want open or closed cans (open=greater soundstage, closed=better sound isolation)

There are no gaming grade headphones or headsets. "Gaming" is just a marketing term slapped on to products to make you think it is specifically designed for the benefit of certain scenarios. There's no difference between game audio and other media, so such classifications are pointless.

Amp/DAC is usually unneeded, but what kind of budget do you want to put towards these headphones?

Well then, HyperX Cloud is a good option. Don't get the "2" unless your onboard audio is really bad.

Sennheiser HD 518Philips SHP9500Panasonic RP-HTF600-SPioneer SE-A1000, and Takstar HI 2050 (same as the Cloud without mic and has an open back) are good headphone-only options. Add a Zalman clip-on or Moov Mic and you've got a headset.
