I am looking at what OS to host a VM for OSX.
I have experience with both VMWare and QEMU/KVM /w Virtmanager.

My hardware is as follows

i5 2500
G1 Sniper M3
R9 290

8GB RAM

500GB HDD (Where the VM will be stored)
The OS will be used for programming as I much prefer OSX for programming over Windows and Linux and I want to learn swift so xcode is needed.

Which OS would you recommend?

Thanks!

I would but the G1 is not best supported on hackintosh, audio takes ages to work, sleeping does not work also, and the r9 290 as far as I know does not work well under load, updates dont work also.

Dual Booting would be your best bet.

Windows is the best way to do this, since u wanna play some games (as I understand).

You can use VM for OSX, it'll work fine, had experience doing this.

Also mind using separate drives for OSX and windows (or dualboot), performance will be better, than using VM.

So what do I do about updating? also I was thinking VM so I can snapshot the OS then if anything breaks I can restore it faster than I can install it

Hackintoshing/Dual booting OS X as it is, when done correctly on hardware which has good enough compatibility is pretty simple for the most part (I say this from re-installing a hackintosh about 8 million times, I'm at the point now where I could probably get one working with my eyes closed).

It's a bit daunting at first, but honestly tonymacx86's forum is the best place to go for any guides/advice. Updates are usually all A Ok (as long as it's not one of those updates that re-installs the OS, like upgrading from Mavericks to Yosemite - That you would need to do manually, or at least use the USB installer in order to boot back into OS X to reload the sys files needed to boot on a none-mac motherboard).

You can always PM me and I'll do my best to offer all the advice I can on Dual Booting.

But from reading your post looks like you've already looked into the compatibility and it's not very good?

----

Anyway, I also have an OS X virtual machine running on my Windows Server 2012 R2, in Virtual Box. It works flawlessly.

You have to use a none-retail version of OSX, otherwise it doesn't work very well (if at all) with VBox.

I can provide links to the modded version if you want as well, just PM me, I'll help in any way I can. :)
