Hi everyone!

So I am prepping for my first build, but I am having a lot of trouble with deciding on a few parts.

Edit* I am planning on using this PC for a mixture of gaming, Adobe VFX work (after effects, premire pro, photoshop), and moderate 3d modeling using blender and a few other programs. Budget is between 2-3000. Games are a mixture of modern AAA's, and MMO when I have the time. Sorry I didn't post this before :)

Here's the current incarnation of the build:

http://pcpartpicker.com/p/HcTkyc

My main issues are with a motherboard, and the RAM, so the ones I have on the list are tentative.

Almost every X99 motherboard I can find that is reviewed on Newegg has gotten around 3 eggs or less, with some pretty troubling opinions listed. The ASUS Extreme is REALLY expensive, and probably overkill. I have also looked at Gigabyte, MSI, and a few others, but I am just not sure.

As for the RAM, I have heard decent things about G-skill, but it is also on the expensive side, and I just want to find out if its worth it. I do know that I want 32Gb DDR4, and I guess 2400 is cool.

Lastly, if anyone see's anything particularly troubling with the overall build, PLEASE feel free to mention it. Thanks!

What is this for? If it's for gaming, you're seriously overspending. The cpu won't give you any performance increase over a z97 chip, you don't need more than 8gb of ram, and for the same price of that 980 you could get an R9 295x2, which is much faster.

Don't ask to ask, just ask... please 🤨

If you do "moderate" rendering work, an i7 4790k is better suit for you and your wallet. It will change the mobo to a Z97 as well and the RAM to DDR3, but it doenst matter all that much. I'd suggest MSI Z97 G45 Gaming Mobo and any 32 GB DDR3 2100 you want.

Use that extra money you save to get another 980 :3?

Hmm... Well when I said "moderate" I kind of meant a "moderate" amount of the time lol. I am not exactly making Pixar films here, but I am consistently increasing the complexity of my scenes and renders. I do know that I want this thing to be pretty future proof, and I will probably be adding on later when/if necessary.

I'd probably add in a scratch disk (non ssd) for dealing with editing. Though productivity software is generally out of my scope. I own the case in question and can say adding in a bottom fan or 2 plus the bracket that aims at the gpus really helps keep temps down. The bottom fans are 120mm, the bracket can fit 120/140 but i'd recommend 140.

Are scratch disks generally just dedicated external HDD's, or can they be internal as well? I was planning on adding some fans (ones with lights and crap :D ), but my build reset on PCpartpicker, and I didn't feel like going in and picking all of them again lol.

I see no reason why they couldn't be internal. I know with recording it is a good idea to have the video saved onto a drive that isn't the one the game is running on. I'd imagine the same principal applies for reading a file from x drive then writing it to y drive since mechanical drives are terrible at doing double duty. Obviously avoid SSDs since the drive will pretty much get wrote to constantly.

Ah, well I wasn't planning to use the SSD for media, but my OS and programs ect... All my media files and crap would be going to the HDD.
