Hey guys! This is my first post here, and wanted to know the general benefits of upgrading from Z97 into X99. I know a few of the benefits, but i'd like to have it explained very detailed before i go spending money.

. Budget & Location
I have a budget of 1700 Euro's, and my location is Belgium in Europe.
. Aim
My aim for this system is to have a very smooth gaming experience. I also am going to do some heavy video editing later on. And It's also meant for benchmarking.

reason:

I am upgrading because i'm using DDR3 memory and all the shizzle for quite some time, and i can see the benefits of going into X99. I also see it having lots more upgradeability than Z97 platforms or just even the platforms using DDR3 overall.

If PC specs are needed, i'll post them. But my point is just to ask if X99 is actually benefitial overall.

If i could get some clear explanations i'd be very happy.

Thanks guys!

X99 isn't that beneficial yet.  Sure, if you want bleeding edge tech right now, go for it, however there are some drawbacks.  DDR4 is very expensive, and still in its infancy.  If you just want it for DDR4, wait for Skylake to launch later this year.

Welcome to the forums!

Do not upgrade from Z97 to X99. If you were buying new, it'd be one thign, but there is NO reason to do the swap. I did and wasted my money.

My arsenal: i7-9700k Gaming Rig, an iPhone, and Stupidity.

For gaming, it won't make a difference (provided you have a decent CPU already) unless you plan on 3 or more GPUs in the system.

For video editing, it will definitely help, but it will have to be up to you if it's worth the cost. For most people, a LGA 1150 i7 will be fine.

Right now, DDR4 is expensive and not really much better than DDR3 in terms of real world performance.

It may be worth waiting for Skylake (rumoured for 2016 at some point), or seeing how your current setup handles video editing to decide if you want to upgrade.

X99 only offers benefit at the very bleeding edge of gaming. It does offer real benefit in video editing and rendering. It is also a good benchmarking platform, especially if one wants to measure SLI & Crossfire performance.

While the cpu currently available on X99 are not as fast as the top end of Z97, their additional cores/threads do make a difference in multi-threaded environments. Even though most game titles do not make full use of the resources, other parts of the system run much more efficiently and so there is actually a marginal benefit in gaming.

DDR4 does make a difference. Probably more in editing & modeling tasks than in gaming. But even in gaming there is a marginal improvement.

With 40 PCIe lanes available using all but the lowest end cpu, multiple gpu can be run with a full 16 lanes. Might only make a marginal difference at the moment, but as gpu become more powerful the improvement will likely be noticeable, especially at higher resolutions. The additional lanes also make it possible for better and higher performance support of M.2 ssd type devices.

Individually the small performance improvements in gaming are hardly worth it. Collectively the difference becomes more noticeable, but still not worth the cost premium. But that is today. With much higher resolution displays and more powerful gpu just around the corner, I suspect that will change.

There is a caveat. Desktop Skylake cpu are heavily rumored to be coming out before the end of 2015. Expected to be available with both DDR3 and DDR4 motherboards, it may prove a better choice when gaming is the principal activity.

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Until you actually start doing that heavy rendering, NO, don't upgrade. And when you do, then you can THINK of upgrading.

As pointed, wait for Skylake. Although I heavily disagree with everyone saying that desktop skylake is coming by the end of 2015, I do think it's worth waiting for it.
