Hello Gents,

I have Windows 8.1 running on my Laptop and inside it I have 16GB Memory, 480GB SSD (os) and 1TB hdd (Back up/storage)

When i got the Laptop with Windows 8.1 on it I didn't know that much about the OS due to only ever having Windows 7 Pro 64Bit on my PC,

When i used my Laptop a little flag ( at bottom right on the task bar) was showing....Then a little clock appeared..

I found out after a little while     it was doing Automatic maintenance But it Slowed my Laptop right down :(

stopping web pages loading and much more,

So i looked into it further and found that part of the Automatic maintenance was to defrag my hard drive   :o As i said above

I have an SSD with the OS on and they are Not supposed to be Defragged because it will shorten it's life span So..

I disabled the Auto maintenance in the task scheduler,

It then restarted it's self on numerous occasions..So i just disabled it Again,

Yesterday afternoon... like i always do every 3 days I checked to see if there was any new windows updates for my Laptop and

Windows update said there was 38 important updates so i clicked install and waited,  the next second it said 38 updates and next to that it said

updates Not Needed.. and wouldn't download them... I was Puzzled! so i tried again to install...same again and again....Then I thought..And Enabled Auto maintenance again,

The next second it started up and....Yes... it downloaded All the updates  So..

Does this mean that.. We the Windows 8.1 owners .. have to have Auto maintenance including Disc defrag forced upon us even though

some like me have SSD's in their systems?

Seems Very wrong to me  <_< and a lot more folk on the Microsoft website,

Yes i want my System to be running at its Very best but this even starts running while I'm working on the laptop even

though I've set the times for it to run when Idle,

I have Trim enabled on my SSD but not 100% sure what that does,

Catch 22 I think  :(

Thanks,

Les

Kinda an explanation of trim:

Trim is to SSDs as Defrag is to HDDs.

(Basically it cleans up the SSD and optimizes it to perform better.)
