Looking to purchase a new AP as my ASUS RT56U (router turned into AP) has gone down hill.

Requirements:

Wireless A/C (got 3 devices that use it now, 2 laptops & Shield)

cover at least: 20ft by 20ft or 6m by 6m empty room (think any will anyway)

5ghz & 2.4ghz

option to turn DHCP OFF. (some business ones don't allow this...)

Budget: £0-200, dont mind looking up to 250 if they offer much more

will service/connect to at least 8 devices

AP's don't have any router functions such as DHCP. Are you looking for a router/AP combo unit or just an AP that you'll be plugging into a router?

If you're looking purely for a AP, this would be my suggestion by far.

I was looking at the Ubiquity ones when I needed a new AP but it was going to cost a good $300AU or more if I wanted dual band N or better. The cheaper ones are single-band N300 which would, if anything, be a downgrade and even those are $85AU. Just for one. And I wouldn't get one because those things IMO only really make sense when you have multiples, their strength AFAIK is in the smart hand-off. They shouldn't be the first suggestion people make.

In the end I went for a DLink DAP-1665 AC1200 Access point. It was $120AU and it has done the job. There's still one room where the reception is dodgy but it's about 10m, 3-5 brick walls and a fridge from the AP. So unless you are willing to spend big for something which probably won't give you that much of an advantage I'd suggest something along the same lines. Especially if you've been used to and ok with N600 for a while.

Fools think they know everything, experts know they know nothing

Well I only recommend them because they have a ton of useful features and also offer seamless and easy expand-ability with additional AP's. Plus they have much better reliability than consumer grade AP's.
