Difficult Networking Problem?

Go to solution Solved by lions240,

You would have to go into your router and block HTTP and HTTP in restrictions. You want to block it only for that device and not all the devices so I would statically assign the IP to the system and add the restrictions to the statically assigned IP. This will allow the computer access the local network and not be able to access the Internet.

Im not sure if this is even possible or not, but I'm trying to set up one of my desktops to where it has access to my home network and all my other PCs, but not allow it to have access to the internet. Does anyone have any ideas on how to do this?

Can PC's connect and play games together through the Homegroup? Or simply through a cat5 cable?

It's would be like 2 lines in an ACL, but I am going to assume your router does not allow you to make your own (you need enterprise grade equipment for that, usually).

You could always manually set the default gateway to 127.0.0.1,but that's a very unsecure way of doing it because it takes like 15 seconds to reverse, and it is done on the host computer. It will stop a lot of people from accessing the Internet though.

Check your routers firewall settings. There might be some setting there which let's you block Internet access from a specific host.

That's like asking "can a CPU talk to the GPU through Windows or does it need a motherboard?" it doesn't make any sense.

I am going to assume you mean LAN when you said Homegroup in which case it depends. A lot of newer games does not allow you to play over a LAN. A lot of older games will let you play over a LAN just fine.

If you by cat5 cable mean just a cable between two computers, without any switch or router then again, it depends on the game.

The computers can talk to each other in both scenarios though.

Well I'm just thinking, if two computers are linked by an ethernet cable, it won't have access to the Internet because it won't be going through the router. But my question was if that would still allow the two computers to play games together; because I used to do that with xboxes to play system link with my cousins when I was little. Since it depends on the game I guess that's just something I'll have to experiment with. Thank you.

why is internet access a bad thing?

if games support lan gaming there will be an option to do it even if there is internet access.

but with all the drm these days many games won t work without internet

Anything I write is just a comment, take is as such, there is no guarantees associated with anything I say.

Keeping it off of the internet is mostly just a security thing. But it was also just out of curiosity. I didn't even know if it was possible or not, so I was just wondering.
