Just a thing I was wondering why are so many cheap cases have the top mounted form factor and what the advantages/disadvantages of a top mounted PSU.

Helps with exhausting hot air usually since most of those cases don't have the best ventilation, the main benefit of having a bottom mounted PSU is to make the case bottom heavy so it won't tip over easily if someone was to knock it.

@CM7, you could turn it round so it does not blow on the motherboard and drill "NEAT" holes in the top so air can flow though.

That's not how PSU fans work. PSU fans pull air into the PSU and push it out the back.

Wrong way. The PSU fan is an intake, not exhaust, so it will be pulling air away from the motherboard.

They put them up there because cases used to be made that way to make sure that is actually got airflow, as quality and efficiency wasn't as good as it is now, but OEMs still have cases that way round so it's easy to sell cheap ones with that orientation.

  that makes sense for the cheap cases to be used in builds that don't require a lot of air flow.
