Apc Backpro 280

so i have one of these and the beeping is anoyying when on battery

it has a DB-9 RS-232 port on the back so i plugged a cable into and and the other side into my DB-9 RS-232 on my pc

but the program doesn't see it

do i have to buy a DB-9 RS-232 to usb for it to work?
