Well, halp pls.

Go to solution Solved by TheRetiredSlave,

'Nothing is future proof. The GTX 970 is a very good card, but I'm only really comfortable running 1440p on my 980. Anything higher than 1440p and I have to sacrifice graphics settings enough that I feel that it just isn't quite there yet.. You may need a GPU upgrade for when you jump to 4K a few years from now (and by then there will be GPUs that are powerful enough to push 4K without sacrificing anything).

That being said, the 970 is still an exceptionally good performer at it's pricepoint, and is more than good enough to run the latest and most demanding games at good settings for quite a while.

Ah, oke. But don't you think the i7 is better if I'll be keeping the CPU longer then 3 years... in the long term.

Maybe? DirectX 12 does put more emphasis on CPU multithreading, in which the i7 should be better. Other than general speculation, we don't really know how it should perform.

If you have the extra $100, there's no reason not to go with the i7 (other than maybe spending the money on other stuff), but don't expect a huge difference for current games.

Hello guys,

I'm planning to build my own computer, but this time I'll be able to spend more money on it. I don't know much about the motherboards and Intel Cpu's so I hope you guys can help me a bit out. I broke my AMD Anthlon CPU pin... time for a new pc and I want to go Intel this time...

This is my plan:

CPU:

Intel i7 4790k

Motherboard

MSI Mpower Motherboard (Z97)

GPU:

GTX 970 (MSI or EVGA)

I got at the moment a HD Radeon 7700 Ghz Edition

PSU:

I don't know what PSU yet. At the moment I use a Coolermaster B500 (500W), will switch later.

SSD:

250 GB SSD (I think I'll go for the Samsung EVO 840)

HDD:

I've at the moment a WD 1 TB HDD (4 years old, but it works lol)

Case:

Sharkoon case (Already bought)

I can't game now or do anything, because I've no CPU. So I'll be buying the Motherboard and CPU first and the other parts later. Can you guys give me suggestions?

I mean, is this 'future proof'? Good for 4K Gaming (may be I'll buy a 4K monitor in 1 or 2 years)... etc.

Looks pretty good for 1080/1440p, but do not expect to play newer AAA titles at 4k in a year or two with a single 970, it's probably not going to happen. Even with current AAA titles a single 970 struggles quite a bit.

RIP in pepperonis m8s

1. Overall it would be a good build. But you could definitly improve it

  • i7-4790 k is maybe a bit of an overkill. If you only play games, you could also use an i5-4690k
  • Spend the money on a bigger SSD maybe or a new harddrive.

2.  A single 970 is definitly not good enough to play the latest titles on 4K. You'll need at least two 970s. Two 290X or even 390X when they come out would be a much better choice for that, or even GTX 980s if you've enough money.

3. Nothing is "future proof". :P

Well, I can always add another 970 next year, I'll be playing for the coming 2 years 1080P :).

i7 not perfectly stable at 4.4.. #firstworldproblems

I don't think it'll make much of a difference. The i5 is already such a great CPU. Have a look at the FX-CPUs from AMD. They still run pretty good.

I bought the MSI 970 Motherboard 3 weeks ago, but I send it back... people told me to go Intel. The benchmarks seems very good for Intel.

Of course you should go for Intel. What I wanted to say is, that even old CPUs can do pretty well, like the FX-8xxx

Ah alright, will keep that in mind :)! What do you think about the motherboard choice?

The MPower is a great board. One of MSI's higher end products and really nice to overclock with. Does also look really great. A yellow/black themed PC could be interesting :)

But there isn't really a lot to say about the MB. There are so many good MBs from different manufacturers, that it doesn't really matter which one you pick.
