I unzipped the file to a formatted 8GB  drive, and attempted to boot from it. I set the boot priority to USB first, and then my boot drive. It states that it requires UEFI to boot. Is that not automatic with modern mainboards? Also, do I need to do anything with my GPU?

No, i just meant I know how to do Linux USB installs. I've tried Ubuntu, so I'm saying that I've already gone through the process and just need to replicate it with Steam OS.
