So this is my first forum to ever post on, but I am hoping to get some advice on my build.

Case: 900D

I know its big and a little unnecessary but I want to make a custom water loop and really like the look of it

Power Supply: AX1200i

I am not sure about this just hoping for a energy efficient that will last me for years

Processor: FX8350

I really don't see the benefit of getting an intel and amd is just so much cheaper

Graphics Card?

I don't know but I was thinking about getting a NVIDIA sheild

RAM?

I really don't know

Hard Drive:

I already have a 256gb SSD and 500gb mechanical

Additional Info:

I love to play first  shooter games and do some Photoshop work. I also use solidworks/autodesk a lot.

I am hoping to make a good looking PC and wanted a matching color scheme preferably black and blue but am open to change.

If you like the look of the case go for it, its mostly personal preference.

For your first build do not do a custom water loop.

If you don't plan on doing tri or quad sli your PSU is way overkill.  Go with around 750-850w from a good brand.  Like an EVGA 850w.

Processor:  Intel's have much better performance per core, are more efficient and output less heat.  Also, the AMD architecture is getting outdated compared to the newer Intel one.  If you like to photshop AMD can definitely help, but also take a look at an i7 4790k.

For graphics card you have two decisions:  AMD, or Nvidia.  If you want a shield then go with a newer nvidia 9XX series card.  Second decision is how much do you want to spend.  You can get a 970 for $320-380.  A 980 will be closer to ~$600.

For RAM go with a solid brand, G.Skill, Corsair, etc.  8 or 16gb is up to you, again on how much you want to spend.

You look good on storage.  Also, don't forget you are going to need a motherboard.  Go to http://pcpartpicker.com/ to help organize your build.

Thanks for your help!

I have built multiple PC's before I just haven't kept much in touch with current components. Although this would be my first water cooling setup I am very handy and think I can do it.

I am going to go with the NVIDIA 980 and Intel i7 4790k. Is there a motherboard you would recommend?

I would recommend going for 2x970 instead of a 980. That's just so much stronger.

As for mobos, filter the cheapest Z97 with SLI that you can find. Maybe pay 10$ for it to match the color of your build, but aside for that, no reason to pay more.

I personally like the MSI Gaming series (MSI gaming 5 or gaming 7) I personally use the gaming 5 but if you've got the budget you get a lot of cool features on the gaming 7.  I know there are other boards that are just as good (if not better)  If I were you, I'd look to spend anywhere from $120-$180 on a z97 motherboard.
