I currently have a GTX 660 and I was wondering what would be best for future gaming, without spending excessive amounts of money. Was thinking about either a GTX 970 or possibly a Radeon card, not too familiar with Radeon or AMD in general.

One thing you forgot is that Radeon and AMD are not 2 different things.

For example one of the cards is called Radeon r9 290x which is made by amd (or something similar).

An amd card similar to the 970 performance would be a 290x.

(Idk what version of it though, like Lightning or Sapphire etc..)

You could wait to see how the new R9 390x is, or I'd suggest a 970 if you cannot wait. Typically with AMD branded cards they will require more power, produce more heat, and cost significantly less with only marginally worse performance compared to each cards nvidia counterpart in most cases.

Do you think that I should stay with my Intel  processor or selling it and buy and AMD processor with liquid cooling? Might be able to get some more money to spend on the graphics card if I chose to sell the Intel processor as they are quite a bit more than AMD.

I'd say either a 290/290x or GTX 970.

EDIT: Keep your 4790k as it's a really good processor.
