There are a bunch of thing that are coming. There is DDR4 coming soon, Gddr5 which might become popular if the PS4 goes well, DDR5 in the horizen. Then there is the powerhouse known as race track memory which in theory is around 20x faster then standard DDR3 ram. Considering that we are closing in on the point with ram that better speeds make no noticeable improvement so that is quite interesting.

Thing about each memory gen iteration is latency apparently increases, so you need to introduce higher frequencies to compensate for it.

Sounds like the memory war is basically a dog chasing its tail and it just running faster and faster.
