Upgrading cpu for x-97

Go to solution Solved by Oshino Shinobu,

Broadwell would be the next CPU launch I think (if they're even going to bother with it before Skylake.) but it's likely not going to be worth waiting for as it's likely going to just be power efficiency improvements.

You may as well go with the 4790K. There's not much of a difference in price, and it's a better CPU overall.

Hi fellow techtippers. Recently I've come into a sort of dilemma. I Am currently running a pentium in my asus ranger x-97. The problem is that even though the cpu is overclocked like a bat out of hell, i still want to upgrade as i need the cores for some future project.

The questions that I ask today are :

1) it was predicted that some new cpus would arrive for this platform. What is their name and when will they come out as i forgot :(

2) should i go for a 4770k or a 4790k? Or wait for these new cpus if they will exist?

Thanks in advanced and keep up the good work :)

I think that broadwell/skylake is coming out soon

Broadwell K is rumoured around Q2 2015 and Skylake some point after that (maybe 2016?) (From Wccf, so take with a pinch of salt)

Skylake is probably going to be where the performance increase comes, but it will require a new Chipset anyway.

I would just skip Broadwell and get the the 4790k. I imagine it'll barely be a difference, and they're probably be at least $100 more expensive. Prices are going down right now, and I would take advantage of that. :P The real one to wait for is Skylake, but that will most likely be very expensive due to a new chipset in the motherboard.

At the prices you get them, theres just no reason to not go 4790 over 4770

Intel 4790 K - R9 295X2 - Gigabyte Z97-SLI - Corsair Vengeance Pro Black 1866 CAL9 - Corsair HX 1000 -Samsung 850 EVO SSD - Samsung HDD - H100I - Corsair C70 - G400 Logitech - Asus VS247H - WASD custom mechanical and QCKPAD!

Staples of LTT: Getting an 4690 K will resurrect your lost family members, AMD = More heat thus AMD = Satan.

If you're sticking with your current motherboard, go with the i7-4790K. Broadwell may never even materialize as a complete desktop generation.

If you're going to wait for anything, wait for Skylake. But that's going to need an H170/Z170 motherboard.
