 eGPU Setup: Macbook Pro 13" 16GB DDR3 RAM, 512GB SSD, i5 3210M, GTX 980 eGPU

New PC: i7-4790k, Corsair H100iGTX, ASrock Fatal1ty Z97 Killer, 24GB Ram, 850 EVO 256GB SSD, 1TB HDD, GTX 1080 Fractal Design R4, EVGA Supernova G2 650W

You won't be maxing any current AAA games at 2560*1080 with that GPU

You said you're getting a monitor. A 970 or a 290/x would do it comfortably.

A 290x and a 970 both have 4GB of vram. Nvidia's bus width is lower, but they have tricks to make it take much better use of the bus. They are about the same in both price and performance.

 

@EntAsia, a 290x will run hotter and take more power though, so take that into account.

I also second the R9 290X for this choice. A sapphire R9 290X Tri-X or Vapor-X card would be fantastic.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
