Game Stutter. Halp.

Go to solution Solved by T.Vengeance,

Fixed. While going through windows updates, I saw some of them had failed installing. So I decided to reinstall Windows and now it's all good. I guess some sort of vital program for gaming (Could be some net framework thing) wasn't installed properly.

Sometimes after playing 20min of games my game just tanks on me. I don't know why. The frames start to drop and start to stutter. It goes from 70fps to <30 fps but like horrible fps because its like 30 fps then the game freezes then continues with 30 fps then freezes for a few more seconds. It's not just video, it's audio too. My audio starts to stutter and crackle. Think of like some DJ turning the records. That's how it sounds like. This happens randomly too. I don't know what to do. I've done a clean reinstall of both my audio and graphics drivers. I've replaced the thermal compound on my CPU just incase it was overheating, even though my max temps were at 68 degrees while playing games. I've ran everything at stock clocks. Any ideas?

Specs are:

1. Some generic Acer mobo.

2. GTX 660Ti

3. Asus Xonar Ds soundcard

4. Intel Q8400 Quad Core

5. Some generic Acer ram 8gb

6. Corsair TX850 V2

I can temporarily solve it by just restarting my computer. Also, if I exit my game and leave my computer for 10 min or so, the problem goes away. I was just wondering if there's any other options before I try to reinstall Windows 'cause moving all my files to another HDD is a pain.

what is the cpu/gpu usage uunder gaming load... what games are you playing

Next time your running a game, minimize and  check task manger resources. Your CPU could be maxing out causing the game to stutter. What game in particular are you playing when this occurs, does it happen with other titles?

It happens when I run CoD Black Ops 2. But that's only because I play it often. When I was playing Evoland (which shouldn't even be remotely taxing my CPU), it happened too :(. This problem has only been happening recently (past 2 months) and I cannot figure out what changed over that time.

Did you update video drivers?

68 on what? if it's the CPU, it ain't good , try running it under 60 (this is prime 95 load , not game load I'm talking about)

I'd try to reinstall windows or if you don't want that much work try and clear some add-ware that you probably have somewhere unnoticed. Also is your HDD full, if it is try and clear some space like 5-10 gigs at least on OS partition. and yes

that's important too. I assume it's gonna be some AAA titles because your PC is running quite hot and you have a beefy GPU. Try and close some background applications like Skype, Browser, (((Utorrent))), postpone updates if they are going on now.

Also i just read your last comment, try and run some torture tests to see if your PC is ok like memtest , prime 95 and GPU load like msi combustor. Some part maybe beginning to die.

I would 1st go and check PC (memtest etc) then i would deal with the temps cuz they aren't good and if that doesn't solve anything or find the answer, i'd reinstall and see what happens.

If you have the new nvidia drivers that is what is causing it, completely uninstall the graphics drivers and use ccleaner to remove them from registry then download 314.22 drivers from nvidia.

Haven't thought of that. Yes new drivers can screw things up, it's not always better to get the latest. Kudos for that, try it out and see what happens!

It sounds like power management is kicking in, try setting it to maximum performance and make sure it never turns off the HDD drives or display...

Also 68 degrees is fine for gaming on either CPU or GPU, you have nothing to worry about there.

Yeah I've recently been hearing that the 320.18 drivers have been screwy so I've reverted back to the 314.22 drivers. Can drivers screw up the card? Cause I'm thinking that I should RMA my gfx card before it's too late (if that's the problem). It's definitely suspicious that I've had this problem for the past 2 months and the 320.18 drivers came out 2 months ago. I really should've disabled automatic updates.

Hmm...didn't think of using CCleaner. Thanks for that. Imma try it.
