Hello!

I am building my first PC and I have been learning on the topic for about two or more months now. The image attached shows what I have already chosen. I do however have a few questions.

Things to note before posting:

  • I already have an SSD and do not need to buy one.
  • I already have a case and do not need to buy one.
  • I know it is not necessary but I own an audiophile external sound card.
  • I will also be using the PC for video and photo editing with some 3D work.

Questions and my thoughts behind the decision of the components I chose:

  • HDD - It is either this one or the Seagate barracuda, both same price and performance
  • RAM - It is the best RAM for the price with standard height and comes highly recomended.
  • MOBO - As we all know motherboards do not affect performance, so I chose the cheapest one that suits my needs, but is also reliable.
  • GPU - What is your experience with KFA2 (European branch of Galax) Right now I do not know weather to choose this one or the Zotac AMP! Edition.
  • CPU - Should be pretty straightforward. I plan to overclock it if needed and cannot afford an i7-4790K.
  • Cooler - The decision here was between this one and the 212 Evo. I read many reviews and while the Evo is better in performance this one is about the same and much more silent, also comes with MX4 paste.
  • PSU - This is where I am really undecided between this CM and the EVGA 600B. Both use the same low-quality capacitors and have the same score with most reviews. The CM however is 10€ cheaper and comes with 4 6+2 pins, two of which I do not plan to use. I was also looking at the Seasonic one, but it has one 6-pin and one 6+2 pin, whereas I need two 8-pins.

Thanks for the help in advance!

Good part selection.  As far as video render, you might find going with a Xeon more of a benefit.  Picture editing and 3D modelling sometimes use the GPU, it all depends on the software.  How often are you doing this type of work?  Are you making money from it?

It is like an i7 with a locked multiplier:  http://de.pcpartpicker.com/part/intel-cpu-bx80646e31231v3

Oh, and am I right about video rendering depending solely on CPU?  I have never really played around with video.

Oh, and am I right about video rendering depending solely on CPU?  I have never really played around with video.

I have of course looked at the Xeon selection, and yes it definitely offers good performance for the price, but since it does not support overclocking it would be better to go with the H97 chipset motherboard, but I could not find one that would be significantly cheaper. Then I have looked at the rendering times and importance of hyperthreading in such applications and found out, that the difference it makes is minuscule, especially if I were to overclock the i5 and then I would be able to match the performance of a slightly higher cost Xeon. As for video rendering I think you are correct, but the new Premiere has a CUDA boost intergrated. As for 3D rendering I plan to use the Octane render engine, which is solely CUDA-based. No, I do not make money from it, but I do plan on going to a media college next year and maybe-if everything will go as planned; earn money with this line of work.

Thank you for the input.

I would go with a GTX 970 and change the cpu up to an i7 4790K. If you have room in your budget to also squeeze an SLI capable board in then you also have the option of adding a 2nd card later on.

I would rather have one card and have it for a long time, the 3.5GB on the 970 makes me doubt in it's performance in future, more demanding games. I also plan on buying a good 1440p screen in the next few years so I need the 980 for that too. I will swap the CPU if I will really feel the need. I have no interest in SLI as I would need a better power supply too.

The 970 still has 4GB Vram. It is just the last 0.5GB that is slower. I don't think it would be an issue even at 1440p. If you want peace of mind then stay with the 980.

The i7 4790K will definitely be of use as you are doing Editing and 3D work.

KFA2/Galax are also fine imo. If the Zotac is the same price, then I think it has a longer warranty ? so it might be worth swapping.
