"Old" iMac into tower?

Go to solution Solved by MrSuperb,

About what kinds of "heavy" modifications are we talking about? and could u please explain the necessity of these modifications?

those are all custom parts ... from the motherboard to the psu nothing can be easily transferred to a standard atx case.

if it really is only the hdd, then replace it and use the imac as imac

Peace Guys!

Sorry 4 my bad english beforehand  ^_^

Since quiet a time i have been thinking about building my first own PC, but since im 16 i don't have atm the bucks or time to work for buying the components.

Yesterday i found in the basement of my uncle an iMac and my uncle told me that it doesnt work anymore (bascicly the hard disk is screwed or something similar) and he would have to pay about 200€ to let smoeone fix it. So he said I can have it.

The iMac is "pretty" new from 2012/2011 and it includes a solid i5 CPU and a sufficient GPU for the beginning, so my question is: Can I take the hardware of the iMac and build it simply into a towercase (for further upgrades etc)?

(would there be anything "special" I have to care about?)

I would really appreciate your help!

if only the harddisk is broken, just replace it and use the imac as it is.

edit:

upgrades aren't really possible with iMacs and you cant use a standard case without heavy modifications.

If it's the same design as the 2010 iMac (which I am almost sure it is), I found this: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Upgrade+iMac+Intel+Core+i3+CPU+to+Core+i7/8670

It explains how to upgrade, but you can use this guide as a how-to remove the CPU. Not sure about the GPU. I think it is a mobile GPU though, so this isn't removable

Yes, that too. I suggest that unless you really want a PC and don't mind spending cash

Firstly thanks a lot for the attached link  :D

the iMac I got has a AMD hd 6xxxM, so the "m" stands for mobile and not removable, isnt it?

If it's ATX or mATX form factor, I would put it in its own case. Test another HDD in it to check if the HDD really is the problem, and then if it is, just buy an new drive and install Windows and the Apple drivers.

Ok, ill try this, thanks!
