replacing a GPU (Nvidia - AMD)

Hello everyone!

Last summer I did an upgrade to my system for changing my HD 6950 for a GTX 770. But now I still got the card in my drawer on my room and I want to sell it so that it can make someone else happy.

But I want to see if the card is still working and there for I need to put it in my computer too test and see if it all works. Only problem is, I have never done anything before and am really nervous because I'm afraid that I will screw things up (the upgrade was done by a the local computer hardware store). I hear a lot of people say that building a computer isn't 'that' hard. So then swapping a GPU must be doable? But I want to know the do's and dont's of doing such a thing before making fatal mistakes and ruining the GPU.

So my questions are:

- How to replace the graphics card. [Can you just pull the GTX out (before removing all the screws) and place the HD 6950 in?]

- Do I need to remove any drivers from Nvidia before installing the HD 6950? And do I need to pre-install the drivers of the HD 6950 before putting the card in the computer?

- How to test if the card is any good? [Can I just run a program like Furmark, let it run for 1 hour and check temps? Or are there other/better ways to see if the card is still properly too sell it?]

- Can this be done quick? For example that I can show to people that it is actually working. And if it's easy swapable with my GTX, so that I can do it on the day itselft that the person is coming over to pick it up?

I hope you guys can help me out with this issue!

Thanks a lot already and have a nice day.

- Yes, you can just remove GTX and install the other one

- Probably not, if you're running Windows 7 or later it should get the appropriate drivers by itself (although you might not reach the maximum performance)

- One-hour stress test would probably do the trick

- Yes it can be done quick

Any unknown button should be pressed even number of times.

1. I advice using a program called driversweeper when going from AMD to nvidia or other way around, it basically cleans up any clutter left by the drivers.

2. Yes see above, i advice you to have a install file of the most recent drivers of both cards on your hdd to make it easier.

3. Game benchmarks is the easiest way these days since nearly every tripple A gamemaker sends with a benchmark tool ( Metro last light, ect, ect )

4. It can be done reasonably quick.

1- Press the little tab on the pci e slot and pull it . Detach the screws first tho.

2- Remove drivers from nvidia only.

3-1 hour tests wont be enough for some miner cards that might die after a couple of months of usage.

4- It can be done quite quickly and easily
