Iris Pro vs 750m

Go to solution Solved by D2ultima,

I checked the machines out.

Neither CPU will hold its clocks under any kind of significant load, so it doesn't matter which you get as far as that is concerned. The Mac can't cool either one either. I'd say get the cheaper machine. Though the price jump is sort of justified (extra SSD, stronger CPU, etc) you appear to not need the extra storage much and the CPU upgrade will do absolutely jack shit if you ever stress the bloody thing, so... save yourself some money.

Hi,

Intending on getting an MBP for new laptop in the coming days, but the only thing that I cannot decide upon is whether to go for the standard Iris Pro model or the 750m model. I will NOT BE GAMING.

My workloads will be:

1. Vector working

2. Light to mid Photoshop down the line

3. AutoCAD, SolidWorks and Sketchup, as well as other programs associated with architecture or urban design / planning

I need help in deciding whether spending the extra £350 for the 750m is worth it over the Iris Pro given how polarising the matter seems to be on the other forums.

Thanks in advance,

Jack

$350?!?!? My god, I wouldn't even think about getting the 750M for... I don't know... twice the performance at the most. At least I think that's what the benchmarks were.

Not sure if I am reading that properly, are you saying that you would not say it is a worthy consideration for the upgrade?

that also includes

- faster CPU

- 512GB SSD vs 256GB SSD

I am indeed saying that is is not worth it.

It's not like the OP needs an insanely fast machine with a crap ton of storage.

And even then, I was not aware of those changes (I'm more into looking at the Mac Minis).

The issue is, the CPU would not be much of a benefit to me, given that there would be such small performance differences between the two in almost every case that would apply for me.

The storage on the other hand is a slightly more awkward area, at the moment, my workflow when I am out of the house for large storage files such as photos: Camera - SD - Laptop edit - Format SD - USB - Desktop for mass storage. So at the end of the day, I have few large files on my computer in the end. Down the line if I needed more, I was thinking about getting a Thunderbolt external drive or something to alleviate any stress on the storage sizes, but I have not made a final decision yet.

Iris pro will be enough for your usage tbf. I have the one with 750M and the laptop will switch to the dedicated gpu whenever I open softwares like photoshop, autocad, sketchup etc2 and the battery life will suffer a bit.

And also get the largest ssd & ram capacity you can afford bcoz finding/getting upgrade for it will be a hassle down the line. There's the Transcend Jet drive lite which is like an ssd with sd card profile you can add for more storage.

I have finally moved to a desktop. Also my guides are outdated as hell.
