Disk Space

Go to solution Solved by Ptopman,

I've already used CCleaner multiple times, however, it still only removes 1GB tops, still leaving very little free space on the SSD.

Are the folders related to the OS supposed to keep growing in size? If that's the case, should I look at purchasing myself a larger SSD?

Its going to be windows updates. Unfortunately 40GB is too small to be a boot drive, at a min it should have been 80GB, and that is pushing it. This is coming from a guy that did this when he wanted an ssd.

A program that is really nice and lets you see what is taking up space is called WinDirStat. I would recommend running it and seeing what files are taking up the most space on your drive.

If you get a new SSD, I highly recommend something that is 128GB or bigger.

Hey guys,

I recently built my gaming rig. I'm running an AMD FX-6300 on a Gigabyte mobo, G.Skill 8GB DDR3 RAM with a Zotac GTX 960 (the specs aren't important, just thought I'd mention). In my rig I'm running two hard drives, a 40GB SSD for the OS and a few small programs and a 1TB HDD for storage and the majority of my program installations (including games).

It was all fine, but over the last couple of days the free space on my SSD has been getting smaller and smaller, to the point where there's only about 3GB space left. It did originally have about 15GB of free space left, and to my attention, I haven't installed any large programs to that drive.

From what I've analysed, the WinSxS folder just seems to be getting bigger and bigger, but I'm not sure why.

Does anybody have any idea what's going on? And if you do, a possible solution?

Thanks

  • Run CCleaner.

Run "Disk Cleanup" and delete everything. (Including the Windows Update files and Shadow Copies.)

Make sure any recording programs (if any) aren't recording files to C:\Users\[Name] and not not your other drive.

Disable Hibernation.

Make sure your System Pagefile is not on your SSD.

Yes! 40gb is much too small as you're finding out. Minimum 128gb but I would stump up for a 240/256gb drive. It will take years to run that out even if you don't pay attention to it.

Sir William of Orange: Corsair 230T - Rebel Orange, 4690K, GA-97X SOC, 16gb Dom Plats 1866C9,  2 MX100 256gb, Seagate 2tb Desktop, EVGA Supernova 750-G2, Be Quiet! Dark Rock 3, DK 9008 keyboard, Pioneer BR drive. Yeah, on board graphics - deal with it!

Damn, I didn't realise.

Is there some way of offloading the growing size of folders on the SSD to my much larger HDD without any adverse effects?

To my personal knowledge no. The only way to combat it is to buy a larger SSD.

For example here is what my SSD looks like in WinDirStat, as you can see files and windows is more than 40GB, tho some of the files are junk but not alot.
