Internet only working thru VPN...?

For some odd reason my internet quit working out of nowhere, my first thought was to reboot the router so I did. Waited about 5 minutes and still no internet so I played around a little bit more, I was able to ping a site by the hostname and it would return showing the IP of that site, but no response, so DNS was talking properly. Everything LAN was working fine, and my router showed that the WAN was up, but even pinging google.com from my router failed.

 

I honestly can't remember why, but I remoted into one of my computers that was on a VPN and it had internet. So I used that for a few minutes googling around to see what my issue might be and all of a sudden my main computer started playing Google Music meaning the internet was back up, without me changing anything.

 

The problem is solved, I'm just curious as to what might have happened. Any ideas?
