I couldn't find a proper or recent Darkest Dungeon thread, and after playing the promising game, I really think it's one of the better game released in a good while.

For those who have never heard of it or have, but still doesn't know what the big deal is about this, we virtually always see adventuring as something awesome in games, but Darkest Dungeon brings in the horrible sides of it.

All of your characters have a personality with their own traits, both good and bad. They will change as you adventure, adapting to their experiences, overcoming fears or being consumed by them.

There's only so much an actual real person can take before snapping, and that is very much the case in this game. If you constantly push your characters, never let them rest, ignore their opinions or

don't take enough care of them, they might go insane, maybe getting very selfish or paranoid, which leads them to act on their own. Some are tough enough to overcome it and only have their resolve strengthened.

Some might not even be in shape to join the next expedition, and in worst case leaving you.

The game does this by giving your characters a stress meter. If the stress reaches full, your character will drastically change until he or she calms down and reaches the safety of town.

Darkest Dungeon have a depressing and lovecraftian setting, which only enforces the gameplay. Majority of the game is randomly generated and features expeditions where you can bring 4 mercenaries, attempting to

explore or clear the land of monstrosities, bandits and pagan worshipers. It's quite a hard game, with permanent death and unpredictable gameplay, you'll be pleased if you're the masochist kind of gamer.

So, what do you guys think about it? It's currently in early access, but seems to be working quite smoothly and has lots of content already.

Personally I'm really impressed with Darkest Dungeon, it definitely isn't holding the player's hand, instead it's more like a creepy dude constantly whispering how fucked you are.

I'm only a few hours in and still haven't gotten a proper grip on things. I love how the games make you feel helpless and giving you that constant fear of what's coming for you, I can't think of any other game doing it this good.

If you're a fan of JRPG(mainly turn based combat), depressing games, lovecraftian themes or just looking for something new and different, I definitely recommend checking it out.

To put it simple, a rogue-like RPG with turnbased combat and a personality/insanity system that simulates the horrors of adventuring.

It contrasts the traditionally glorified "epic quests" that ignores the negatives effects, including physiological ones.

Excellent art, awesome narration and overall a masterpiece in terms of atmosphere and setting.

I don't really want to make a tl;dr, the gaming subforum is honestly very lacking in good content in my opinion. A lot of it is just about performance and digging.

Edit: Something else the gameplay delivers is almost constant requirement of sacrifice, there's rarely an occasion where you don't lose anything. Like even if you succesfully complete an expedition, your characters will be stressed and will usually have to relax. If you spend money to let your characters relax, you'll have less money for upgrades as well as provisions for the next expedition.
