So i am helping a neighbor fix his computer. He comes to me and says i bought a new computer because this one is broken but i bought a new motherboard for it because that is what i think is the problem. he wanted to fix it so he could get some important documents off of it. It turns out the motherboard he bought was the wrong one because it had a smaller 24 pin connector. so he bought an adapter and it turns out it was the wrong adapter, it was a small 24 pin connector to a 20 pin connector. I had a power supply that has a 20 pin connector instead of a 24 pin. the power supply is 350 watts and the original power supply was 305 watts so no problem of wattage there. he put the power supply in and when he turned it on this high pitched noise came on with it and nothing else. any ideas what the problem is would help?

Hey,

High pitched noise could be coil whine. A tedious issue that appears on kit, you can get it on motherboards, PSU, graphics cards. A PSU of mine used to do it on boot but after than it was fine.

To get the old data off it would be easier to pull the hard drive out and use a simple hard drive enclosure / dock or plug it into a spare port on your PC to pull the data off.

Once that is done you can see about getting this old machine running again.

Ed

Hey,

Any PC retailer should carry them, failing that online auctions :

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/DUAL-2-5-3-5-IDE-SATA-HDD-HARD-DRIVE-DOCK-DOCKING-STATION-ALL-IN-1-USB-eSATA-/200726506391?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item2ebc3b6b97

Check if the HDD is IDE if it older as most docks will be SATA.
