Hi!

Which method do you think is better for making websites and why?

I think that both have their pros and cons, ss is simple, quick and elegant and html is just very flexible.

Which one would you choose?

Longboarders/ skaters message me!

i guess if you want to do it on a regular basis you should learn HTML. If you just do it once or so then just use something like Squarespace ^^

Just to be more clear, when it comes to web design it's not just HTML you'll need to learn. You'll also need to learn CSS and some Javascript/jQuery.

Then if you want to further your skills, you'll probably want to learn a bit about mobile/mobile first design, responsive design, typography, user experience design, front end frameworks, popular design trends, etc.

It also helps to develop some graphic design skills (photoshop, illustrator, etc) so you don't always need to use other peoples work.

Good Squarespace template designers will utilize many of these topics. So there's a lot more to it than "Use Squarespace or learn HTML" because there's a lot more to web design. It's up to you to decide if it's worth learning all this stuff. Unless you have a big interest in it or want to make a career out of it, it might not be worth the time and effort.

Me wanting to be a Web developer means I'm of course gonna say HTML but squarespace is ok if you want to make one site (or, you know you could always hire a Web developer :P )

Honestly, from my standpoint, I think there are too many sites that will make websites for you, for example: Weebly, Wix, SquareSpace, etc, that I wouldn't even say that you should really learn HTML if you JUST want to make a basic site, and plan to not make commercial sites for companies or for your products. I would just say go with Squarespace, but if you do not want to pay to have their subdomain, I'd just learn HTML. I personally do not own a website, however I do know HTML, CSS and JS, for my own personal use, just in case I decide to make websites for other companies.

You should add PHP/MySql to that list for anything that requires a database or login. I wouldn't be handling my sites login using a client side script.

Yeah, of course not. I didn't want to bother getting into the server side stuff though and just focused on web design. Server side development is it's own world to learn.

thats true. it's actually an art designing websites. There is a lot to learn not just about coding but the way the eyes flow around the screen, colours that match and look nice and many others. I wish i was better at the graphically side of it.

but to the topic i will have to say for fast sites SS is the way to go. no need to sit and code for something that doesn't really need that amount off effort.
