Hi everyone! This is my first post here and unfortunately I have to ask for help in it.

I am building a new machine.

Specs:

Mobo - gigabyte z97n gaming 5

CPU - i5-4570

GPU - gigabyte gv-n960g1 gaming

RAM - kingston hyperX fury 8gb

SSD - kingston hyperX fury 240gb

HDD - seagate baracuda 1tb

PSU - corsair cs750m

Os - windows 8.1

On integrated graphics the system runs fine but as soon as I install the GPU all I have is a black screen. I checked the bios before installing the GPU and PCIx slot was marked as primary video output. Also tried to uninstall the driver for integrated graphics but ended up having to disconnect the cmos battery to get back any graphics at all.

Please can anyone help to get my gtx960 running?

P.s the GPU powers up (LEDs glowing and fans turning at idle speed).

Any beeps from speaker? If u don't have one - get it, it helps to analize ~90% mobo/hardware problems.

Possible diagnostic methods:

  • reseat gpu
  • put in another slot (if avaliable)
  • put in another mobo (pc)

Does your pc turns off by itself after running ~20 sec like that? Usually black screen means dead gpu (3 beeps, as I remember).

No beeps no nothing. Seating shouldn't be the problem since I have installed and removed the GPU multiple times (testing to see if computer runs, geting into BIOS to check the video output etc.). Also I cannot put it in another slot since my mini-ITX board has only one PCIx slot. I will try to look for another PC to test it in but not sure where I will be able to find a test pc.

As to turning off - no it stays on and goes into sleep after a while ~ 5 - 10 min but I can wake it up with keyboard/mouse

The only way I see here is to test this video card with another pc. If it's still giving black screen, then - RMA.

Quick googling didn't give me any black screen issues for it.

Yeah I didn't find anything on google as well. Thanks for suggestion - will go and look for a pc to test it in.

There is such thing as black screen with monitor input.

Dumb question...

Do you have the cable plugged into the video card or the motherboard i/o?

I have tried all 3 display ports of my video card. Cant try hdmi nor dvi cause i dont have these cables. Yet there is video output only when the gpu is out of the computer and the motherboard is connected to monitor.

New and weird development of the situation.

First - I tried a generic graphics card from another computer and it worked with my motherboard

Second - I tried my gtx960 with another computer, none of the display ports had a signal, however, a dvi port gave video signal which allowed to use pc -> download drivers and after driver instalation also the display ports worked.

I moved the gtx960 back to my build computer  and connected a monitor with dvi connection, hoping that this would allow me to use pc and domnload drivers as previously, however, this didnt work. on my motherboard even the dvi port didnt work.

Conclusion:

The PCIx slot on motherboard is fine since another card worked.

The GTX960 is ok since it worked somewhat without drivers and ok after driver installation.

When I put both together they are not working.

Any ideas what might cause this?

P.s the test computer had windows 7 but my system runs windows 8.1. should I downgrade to win 7?
