memory confusion questions

well im very confused about memory i understand about the whole ddr3 ddr4 thing but my questions go more into speed as well as motherboard compatability with those speeds take it for example im looking at ddr3 1866 but will that work on say an asus maximus hero vii?

Yes so far ddr4 only works on the new lga 2011-3 mobos and new intel chipset

The motherboard is Z97 and supports DDR3 as of now only the X99 or lga2011-v3 supports DDR 4, also as of now you cannot use a DDR 3 ram on a motherboard supporting DDR 4 or vice versa. Ram speeds above 1866 should't really matter for most users.

yeah that i knew i just wanna make sure speed compatability isnt gonna be a problem and i wanna make sure also about speeds so if i buy ram thats clocked at 1866 does that mean it actually runs at 1866 or does it run to a default of 1600 or so?

It defaults to 1333 but all you have to  do is turn on xmp in the bios and you should be good.
