Me and my firend are having a huge debate and he states Wifi can go no faster than 450mbps. Though many companies have routers that can transfer 300-1300 mbps over wifi. Are compaines making up speeds and false advertising? He claims the companies that build routers are held back from the owner of the technology.

The number router companies quote(if true) is maybe overall. Like if it were transferring multiple things at the same time.

Consumer routers yes with 3 MIMO streams maxes out at 450. 150mbps on each stream. But that's just wireless N you can get 4 MIMO on wireless N but I don't know of any routers that support that or any receivers that support 4 for 600mbps. There are other standards like AC but that isn't used much yet because well not many people have 450mbps internet.

Yup ...AC can be over 1gigE speeds ... Depending on the access point and number of antennas.

Well the specifications for 802.11n goes up to 600Mbps but I am not sure if that's on a single band or dual band simultaneously. Anyway, your friend is already wrong on that front. Then if we start talking about 802.11ac which can in theory, without any revision to the specs, go up to 6.77Gbps (with 8 antennas). We can go even further though. 802.11ad uses the 60Ghz band and can go up to 7Gbps with only 3 antennas.
 
It seems like your friend does not really understand what the WiFi alliance is. The WiFi alliance does not make the wireless standards. What they do is take the IEEE 802.11 standards, and then certifies devices, and all devices certified will work with each other (for example if the 802.11 standard gives the option to do something in two different ways which will not work together, the WiFi alliance picks one of the ways and then that's what all WiFi certified devices will use). Just because the WiFi alliance does not have a certificate for anything over 450Mbps (they actually do, that's an old article your friend found) does not mean it is impossible. Hell, even their own website says that we got technologies which can go above 450Mbps. It's on their WiFi 802.11ac page.

 

That's the theoretical speed by the way. Then we can get into things like noise, it's only half duplex, protocol overhead and a ton of things like that which dramatically reduce the effective bandwidth, but it seems like you and your friend were just talking about theoretical speed.
