Evolve Black Screen after loading

My friend is trying to play evolve, and he launches the game through steam, it gets past the 2k and nvidia and the last screen he sees is where it lists agoragames and turtle rock studios and then it just goes black

Specs + OS, and is it a black screen they can alt tab / ctrl alt delete out of or a total crash type black screen? My first recommendation would be to check for new gpu drivers though.

hes got an 860k cpu, r9 270, asus a78me, vulcan ram 1600 mhz, playing at 1920 by 1080.  he can ctrl alt delete out of it and alt tab and stuff.

I'd check for new drivers from AMD. Then run the file validity check in Steam for the game. Get the simple possibilities out the way first. 

Once those are tried, maybe the last paragraph from this web page is similar.
